Profile & Arrangement
A Galveston Texas based bar pilot with Alaskan roots asked us for a practical boat he and his wife could use for cruises in SE Alaska. Jon’s experience with three Hunt designed pilot boarding boats convinced him that he would not accept a lesser hull. He sought the performance, ride and handling of a Hunt design in his personal boat.
Every summer Jon and Pam take time away from the hustle and bustle, and the heat of a Texas summer, and cruise the fiords and rivers of the Alaskan panhandle. Home base is Ketchikan. They often cover 100 miles in a day finding isolated anchorages in pristine coves bordered by virgin forests and snow-capped mountains.
This 28 footer has just the basics for a couple for a week’s cruising; a V-berth, enclosed head, small galley, lockers, dinette, and cockpit for spectacular stargazing away from city lights. Comfort in the chilly waters is provided by a diesel fired cabin heater and cook stove. The cabin is insulated and fully finished in practical low maintenance materials.
The single 350 hp Yamaha outboard takes this 10,000 lb. boat up to 34 kts and cruises in the mid 20's at 1.5 - 2.0 nmpg. A second auxiliary outboard is mounted for backup get home ability. A standard feature on boats in the region.
Construction was in marine grade aluminum by Crozier Craft in Port Angeles, Washington. Crozier has a reputation for high quality small boats, and was selected by the owner. Aluminum hulls are respected in the region for their ability to take on underwater impacts in waters often hiding submerged logs or whole trees. Ray Hunt Design provided full details, and plate expansions ready for computer controlled plasma arc cutting. As is typical in the Northwest, the boat has only bottom paint.
